 DESTINATIONS IN MONTENEGRO

The Wild North

DURMITOR NATIONAL PARK & TARA RIVER

Zabljak is located in the northern part of Montenegro, close to the Bosnian border. During the winter this area is covered with snow and totally isolated. From the rest of the country. Late spring the area comes to life and reveals its natural beauty. During the summer the high altitude turns into a favorable factor as the moderate temperatures are a very pleasant contrast to the heat of the coastal areas. Zabljak only has 2000 inhabitants and you must be prepared for rather modest accommodation. But once you got over that the experience is fantastic. You can do endless trekking in unspoiled landscapes , dotted with lakes and amazing views all around. One of our favorite tours is a spectacular buggy ride followed by a very tasteful local lunch. You will get to places that cannot be reached otherwise.

Durmitor Ring

An absolute must do is the Durmitor Ring, a circular road beginning and ending in Žabljak that takes you through the wild mountain scenery of Durmitor National Park. You can do this with a rental car or book a tour. This is one of he most spectacular scenic roads in Europe. It boasts a great number of lakes and evergreen forests and the views will  take your breathe away. It passes through tiny villages, picturesque lakes, canyons hundreds of metres deep, pine forests, and high country and sheep everywhere you look.

Tara Canyon

The other attraction that cannot be missed is the Tara Canyon: with its 1300 meter the deepest canyon in Europe and after the Grand Canyon the second deepest in the world. No less than 11 streams contribute to this canyon, creating a fast flowing river impressively surrounded by sky-high walls. In this amazing area we can organize a thrilling zip-line tour across the valley or take you down for an exhilarating day of rafting.

The heart of Montenegro

PODGORICA & SHKODER LAKE

To be frank; when there would be an election for the most beautiful capitals in the world Podgorica would be no top contender, to put it mildly. But the logistics sometimes require an overnight. E.g if you arrive in the afternoon after a visit to Zabljak, or your flight arrives in or departs from Podgorica, or you want to connect to Shkoder town in Albania. And let us assure you there is absolutely nothing wrong with staying one night. We’ll find you a nice hotel and you will spend a totally enjoyable evening, especially if you dine in Restaurant Porto.

Restaurant Porto, our favorite in town, is an amazing establishment. Not only because it is a really nice looking restaurant with impeccable service from waiters in Tuxedo like suits. Also not only because the food and wine are on a really high level and very well presented. The most attractive element is the unbelievable good price/quality ratio. For the same quality in the likes of Paris, Rome or Amsterdam you would pay 3 to 4 times as much. Almost a good enough reason on its own to visit the town.

Shkoder Lake

Shkoder lake is very close to Podgorica and is the biggest lake in the Balkans, shared between Montenegro and Albania. It has been a national park since 1983 and 48 different species of fish have been identified, 50 different mammals and no less than 281 registered spies of birds. We can organize a fascinating boat tour exploring all this natural beauty. You can also explore from another perspective: here are many small wineries along the lake and with our local hero Tanja we can organize a wonderful wine tour. Tanja grew up in this area and she knows everybody and everybody knows her. A very warm welcome is guaranteed.

From Podgorica to Kotor Bay

We can also turn the Shkoder Lake wine tour into the most amazing transfer to Kotor Bay. Not only will you do the wine tour, but you will also visit the ancient capital Cetinje. After that you drive through Lovcen National Park followed by the infamous and spectaculair Kotor Serpentine descent into Kotor Bay. Not a boring transfer, but an amazing day tour.

The most impressive bay of the Adriatic Coast

KOTOR TOWN & KOTOR BAY

The Bay of Kotor is one of the Mediterranean’s most distinctive and striking landscapes. It is located on the south side of Montenegro. The bay consists of four small bays with a winding coastline. The entire bay is surrounded by high mountains that rise directly from the water; one of the most romantic landscapes of the Adriatic coast.

Kotor Town

The most famous town in the bay is Kotor, a medieval old town, surrounded by five kilometers of city walls. These were built by the Byzantines and Venetians from the 9th until the 12th century to protect the town from invaders.

Inside the walls the town’s myriad of narrow cobbled alleyways you will find a Venetian-style church, a piazza full of restaurants and flights of stairs leading into the hills. During the day the town regularly gets flocked by tourists from the cruise ships. At night a totally different atmosphere takes over. Lot’s of youngsters playing music in the squares and on the corners of the streets, turning he town into a musical fairy tale. Theyse musicians are all students of the famous Kotor Conservatory that attracts talented musicians from all over the world.

There is more...

Another important destination in the bay is Perast, a picture perfect car free Venetian style village, perched between the bay and the steep mountains behind it. Herceg Novi is the biggest town at the entrance of the bay, close to the Croatian border. Often overlooked but more than worthy of a visit. A tour of the Savina winery is highly recommended. Wines have been produced since the 18th century here and the tasting of the wonderful wines is combined with a breath taking view over the town and the bay.

Explore the Bay Area

The entire coastline is dotted with restaurants, boutique hotels and small hamlets and a bike ride is a perfect way to explore the area. And of course a boat tour is another fantastic way to explore the bay and the world famous church ‘Our Lady on the Rocks’ that was built on a man made island. Our favorite is a private culinary boat tour where all the wonderful views are combined with the best food and wine the area has to offer.
